The Parable of the Ten Virgins

In Matthew 25:1-14, Jesus shares the parable of the ten virgins.

In this group, there were 5 wise virgins and 5 foolish virgins.

The 5 foolish had lamps, these lamps had some oil, but they didn’t bring along extra,

The 5 wise had lamps, these lamps had some oil AND they brought along an extra jar WITH oil in it.

Waiting for the bridegroom

So setting the stage here, these virgins are waiting for the bridegroom. There is going to be a wedding! Weddings in Jesus’ day took place at night when the first stars came out.

The Bridegroom would gather his men and they would leave his home and CALL OUT along the way to the bride’s home. This calling out woke up and alerted people to come and celebrate this marriage. A general sign the bridegroom was ready was his finishing of the home he had been preparing for the bride. We can assume that the bride received those signs and indications that the wedding was coming, so she prepared everything she would need.

All safe inside

As the bridegroom’s party cried out, people joined the throng to the bride’s home, where the celebration began. Once everyone who heeded the call was safely inside, they shut the doors and locked them….
