Wisdom could very well be the most important asset we give our children. Wisdom is more than just knowledge. I have known people with lots of knowledge but they did have the wisdom to use that knowledge appropriately. So, what is wisdom and how can we instill it in our children?
What is Wisdom?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Wisdom is the ability to use your knowledge and experience to make good decisions and judgments.
The NIV Bible says,
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Read the entire chapter of Proverbs 4. It’s the basis for success in life.
How do I Acquire Wisdom?
As children, we don’t want to listen to what are parents tell us. But they have much more wisdom than we do… no matter what age we are. Value their wisdom. It’s one way to honor them which is a whole other topic.
In the Proverbs, wisdom is actually speaking of God, Himself. Listen to Him. Read His Word daily (Start with a Proverb and a Psalm every day; then add one of the epistles from the New Testament)
- Listen to your father’s instruction
- Proverbs 4:1-5, 4:20-22
- Remember to live by what you have learned
- Proverbs 4:6-7
- Treasure the wisdom you have been given
- Proverbs 4:8-9
- Follow the footsteps of the Father, just as you walked in the footstep of your Daddy as a toddler.
- Proverbs 4:11-19
- Guard your heart from evil.
- Proverbs 4:23-27
How Do You Instill Wisdom in the Hearts of Your Children?
- Live it out before them.
- Talk about it and discuss situations every chance you get.
- Pray for them.
