Somewhere in Wisconsin, on a Friday night, there is a fish fry going on. It’s the place to be and lots of Wisconsiners take great delight in this weekly foodie trek tradition. You will find most bars, supper clubs and your favorite “hole in the wall” boasting the “Best Fish Fry” around. Some serve their fish fry buffet style, but my favorite is to order fresh from the kitchen.
Buffets vary, but you get to pick from perch, haddock, walleye, cod, or bluegills. There is a bounty of rye bread, potato salad, cole slaw, beans and sometimes a hot German potato salad. Some buffets may have salad and a dessert included. It generally runs you around $15 per person.
Somethings a little fishy here

Having moved to southwestern Minnesota I miss many things from my Wisconsin home. First, I miss the trees. Second, is a Culver’s close by and third, is the Friday night fish fry. Upon arriving in Minnesota, one of the first questions I had was, “Where do you go for a good Friday night fish fry?” The response was a mix of “let me think on that” or “hmm, what do you mean Friday night fish fry? Are you thinking lent?”
Oh man, strike two. No trees and now No Friday night fish fry. What is going on here? I just assumed all Midwesterners had been indoctrinated to the Friday night fish fry. Guess not. So a search began, combing the county the best I could, looking for a fish fry that just wasn’t for Lent.
One day while on Facebook, I received a friend request from Fish Chips. What?! Who in the world is Fish Chips? Ever the skeptic, I went and googled them and then it tickled my brain and I remember seeing a food truck in the parking lot of the Pipestone laundry mat, across from the Dairy Queen. I think it’s the same logo, and sure enough… it was.
Reeling it in
Trying to contain my excitement, I told Brad about the food truck with fried fish. We agreed to try it out and marked a date on our calendar. I pretty much thought about fish the whole week. Catfish, Cod, Perch, Bluegills all swimming around in my mind, dipping themselves in and out of seasoning. Goodness! It was like waiting for Christmas.
Friday night arrived. The weather was hot and muggy, but delicious fish was at stake! When we arrived there was already a line. Co-owner Erika greeted us with a smile and we placed our order.
There are several things you can choose from:
- Greens with Turkey
- Beans with Beef
With your fish, you also have the choice of having it seasoned with Ranch, Cajun or Lemon Pepper. The fish comes as a basket dinner for $12.00 which includes a generous piece of fish, waffle fries and coleslaw.
I picked perch seasoned with ranch and Brad picked perch seasoned with lemon pepper. Fish and Chips has other sides like mac and cheese balls, hush puppies and onion rings. They also offer water, lemonade or tea.
Fish and Chips does not have seating, but they do have some large wooden spools for you to set your dinner on and stand to eat. We took our food to our friends home and sat down to dine. The fish had a nice coating on the outside and tender flaky fish on the inside. They give you a little tub of tartar sauce along with a large helping of waffle fries. The hush puppies (an additional side) were delicious also.
In addition to some great fish and sides, you also receive utensils and napkins, plus ketchup and hot sauce. Tada! A complete dinner.
