A Mighty Fortress is Our God

Mighty Fortress

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:

Martin Luther

Over at Gracefully Truthful,[GT] we just finished a study on some of the Names of God {HE}. I love these studies because we get to know God so much deeper. We realize how He truly is an amazing God is and how He can be all things for us. If you don’t see Him in one name, go on to another. Trust me, if you seek Him, He will be found.

I wrote for GT on El Gibbor ~ Mighty God. I hope you will find a moment to go and read. In the meantime, that study got my thinking about our Almighty God. I was reminded of this old hymn written by none other than Martin Luther. Do you remember it?

What attributes of God are meaningful to you today? Does this song give you victory as you face the evils of today? It does for me!

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing,
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us;
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth;
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

  1. Beautiful! I love the way that new technology is making the old hymns come alive in new ways. They are filled with such truth for us!

  2. Oh I know I love all the harmony. Reminded of my chapel in collage (Asbury University) I still am in awe of the first time I experience singing in Hughes’s Auditorium. The acoustics and the harmony with a pipe organ. AMAZING.
