Delicious Hot Fudge

Oh man! Did someone just say delicious hot fudge? I love to make and eat hot fudge. My Grandma Grace Westra had a quick and simple 5 ingredient recipe for making a delicious hot fudge.

This hot fudge became a staple at our holiday dessert table. If we have people bring dessert, we let my younger brother Russell make it and bring it. Making this delicious hot fudge is his specialty. It makes a wonderful ice cream topping as well as adding to dessert recipes that call for hot fudge. Awesome with a turtle cheesecake, sprinkled with toasted pecans, a drizzling of caramel and gobs of hot fudge… YUM!

One of my favorite places to eat some delicious hot fudge was Ella’s Deli in Madison, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, Ella’s closed January 21st, 2018. Taking a quote off of Ella’s Deli website gives you the feel for what Ella’s Deli was.

The Story of Ella’s Deli

In the early 1960s Ella Hirschfeld owned and operated Ella’s on State Street as a small kosher style deli/grocery/restaurant. At that time Ella’s provided an outlet for the Jewish community and others to buy kosher products over the counter, as well as offering restaurant service for about a dozen tables.

In the mid-sixties the current owners eliminated the grocery concept and expanded into a full service kosher style deli/restaurant offering catering for all events, delivery services, and expanding to a full menu, with an additional and separate dessert menu.

In 1976 Ella’s opened another location, thanks to the support of Madison’s community. Again the concept grew. Ella’s Deli now provides an entertainment experience, as well as delicious foods so that entire families enjoy coming to dine. In recent years, Ella’s Deli on East Washington Avenue became the only Ella’s Deli.

Under the same ownership for over 45 years, Ella’s operates with in-house bakers, full time cooks that prepare our foods from scratch, and animations designed and built on the premise

Take a ride and then go eat inside

Iconic to Ella’s Deli was their carousel, it was a major attraction along with all the novelties inside the deli. If you were looking to be visually entertained, Ella’s Deli would not fail to please. Mechanical puppets, interactive tables, a train that moved around the deli… it was magical, to say the least.

My favorite item to order at Ella’s Deli was:

The Famous number # 1 Grilled Pound Cake Hot Fudge Sundae© Our fresh pound cake served under vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream.

I can see it now, rivers of delicious hot fudge streaming down over top the rich vanilla ice cream, puddling gently at the bottom of a silver dessert dish. Finished off with a garnish of fresh whipped cream dolloped neatly on top. If the amount of hot fudge they gave you wasn’t enough, for an extra fifty cents you could get a small condiment cup full of their delicious hot fudge.

Now for the best part – that the pound cake was GRILLED. Yes… oh goodness… it was grilled and that made it the best! I have tried to re-create this in my home and I can never get the pound cake right.  Sigh. It’s just never going to be the same.

Here is the recipe for delicious hot fudge: from Grandma Grace Westra

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions

Melt the butter in a saucepan, add to it the sugar stirring thoroughly followed by the cocoa, once all ingredients are mixed well, add a can of evaporated milk, keep stirring well as sugar will begin to dissolve in the milk, bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes stirring frequently to prevent hot fudge from burning to a boil, remove from heat add in the vanilla stirring in well. Refrigerate after making.

Freezes well. Reheats well in the microwave for a few seconds.

There you go, friends. Shut off the computer and go make yourself some delicious hot fudge, you’ll be glad you did. Your tummy will thank you!

  1. OH my goodness, one of my favorites.

We loved having a reason to go to Madison so that we would have the chance to go to Ella’s Deli. Sad to hear it has closed.

  2. I would have ordered that Grilled Pound Cake Hot Fudge Sundae from there too. This sounds divine. I love fudge, but I’ve never made it myself. You’ve made it seem straightforward enough that even I, a horror in the kitchen, could manage it! Yummmmm!
